The "New" Headshot

Professional headshots are a lot more fun than they used to be. Today's trend is to find a location of inspiration that brings out the "you" that you want the world to see. Shoots are now taking place more frequently in coffee shops, at local landmarks, in the middle of city streets, in botanical gardens, rustic buildings and everything in between. The location, however, usually isn't the hardest decision to make when having a headshot taken. It's what to wear! While it's true that the protocol for headshots isn't as rigid as in years past, it is still important to consider what kind of vibe your personal branding will be giving to the viewer.

Here are a few do's and don'ts to consider when you head to your next shoot:

Embrace:

  • Picking a style that you are comfortable with and that compliments your body type

  • Wearing solid colors or subtle patterns

  • Dressing for your industry or for the job you want

  • Contrasting with your background/location of your shoot

  • Picking a color that compliments your skin tone

  • Selecting simple accessories or jewelry

  • Going with one piece of statement jewelry if you love more flair (like I do!)

Avoid:

  • Going the trendy route just to be trendy

  • Choosing strong patterns

  • Wearing too many accessories

  • Putting on too much make-up (you won't be on stage!)

  • Wearing clothes that are too loose

  • Logos unless required by your employer

  • Chipped nail polish (trust me ladies, this WILL show up in photos)

My aim is to make photo shoots I do as painless and as fun as possible, so hopefully this has been helpful for those of you who are contemplating getting on the other side of my camera soon. My next blog will discuss color theory and how what colors we choose to wear can influence what others see.
